Movin' Forward...........

The heat is starting to kick in now......mid 80's for highs, high 50's for lows. The warmth came a little quicker than I anticipated because of how cold the winter was. I mean it was just 28 degrees a couple weeks ago and now it seems the cold is gone for good, so I've got to get moving preparing the garden for the big Spring season. I've got tomatoes & peppers (hot & sweet) coming and I'm preparing the raised beds by turning over my green manure, weeding, adding compost and then covering with straw while I wait for the plants to get bigger.

Of course there's still plenty going while we wait for the warm veggies to arrive. My onions are bulbing....which I'm mildly surprised by. Lettuce has been tasty, and my potatoes look like they're progressing well. Of course I've never grown potatoes before so I really don't know! I do know that my broccoli is doing well...because that I have grown before. Actually I'm wanting the broc & potatoes to hurry up so I can make room for some corn.

Red Meat radish......I don't know, didn't taste right for me. Maybe it's too warm in Florida.

  1. Your veggies look wonderful! All I know about radishes is that if you do not keep them watered well they will taste woody. You know like bell peppers, if they do not get enough water they will taste bitter. Your comment on my blog made me laugh out loud for a while!!! I too am a idiot.

  5. Looking great! I'm itching to get things going outside. Last week we hit -4* and yesterday it hit 70*. Go figure! The snow is gone (mostly... still a few remnants where it drifted or was piled). I moved my onions and leeks to the cold frame! That makes more room inside for something... hmmmm...

  8. Everything looks so healthy, too. Do you find that you have less insect/ disease problems than a southern FL garden? Or are you just having a great season?

What's that interplanted with the onions?

  9. Hey lauraw......great question. I have a few answers. 1) It just got done being winter, and in North/Central Florida it can get nice and chilly which leads to a lack of bugs/disease. 2) The better the soil..... the stronger the plant.... the least amount of damage by bugs. Bugs/disease, like most predators, go for the weak. 3) Water correctly. If you do it incorectly.....problems will come. 4) I don't use pesticides because I don't want to kill the good bugs that eat the bad ones.

I have other onion family stuff planted with the onions. Such as.....Scallions, Leaks & Shallots.
