Spring into Action.

Getting ready for my spring garden.....I almost can't wait! Well actually I'm not waiting as I've already planted 70 tomato seeds, 50 hot & sweet peppers, 12 cukes, 23 squash, 12 watermelon, 12 eggplant and 4 pumpkin. I've still got about 35 potato plants and 40 broccoli that need to be harvested before I plant my spring crop. It's going to be hectic! Here's some pics to put some visual to it:

Potatoes & Broccoli need to get going....I plan on planting corn here in April.

I don't think my onions are going to bulb. They went about 2 months with very little sun & I think it messed them up. I know next year they'll have sun. How do I know?.......................

...........because I did what any good gardener would do.........cut some trees down! I love trees, but I needed sun! I use a lot of wood in my fireplace anyways, so it won't go to waste.

I also moved my garden shed to make room for some soon-to-be new additions......Orange, Grapefruit, Kumquat & Apple trees. I'm pretty excited about the Apple trees. They haven't been around too long in Florida (I've heard just within the past 10-15 years) and are pretty rare, but they do grow here. Two kinds I'm looking at are called "Anna" & "Dorsett Golden". Hopefully I'll get them tomorrow!

  1. Exciting times in your yard! That is one big tree you chopped up, that must have been a work out. The warm season crops look like they are doing great under your lights.

Your onions may not bulb if they are not the right variety. Not sure if you have read this already but there is short, intermediate & long day varieties which all bulb at different day lengths. I think in Florida you grow short day varieties (10-12 hrs of daylight to bulb) over the winter months. Check out the link below to Dixondale Farms, they have all kinds of info on onion varieties and they will even ship onion transplants right to your door.

  2. Hey Dan.....I know I'm a rookie, but come on man! lolol! Yeah, I used short day onions but I'm telling you......no sun for almost 2 months. They get full sun now, since I cut down some trees. There's still time yet.....we'll see.

  3. Well you have done better then me. Last year I just picked up any old onions and ended up with marbles sized bulbs that were extremely strong. I am trying for some big onions this season now that I know about the proper varieties. Not sure if I have the knack for onion growing though, my seedlings are not looking to hot.

Your onions do look very strong and healthy. With the extra light they should produce great bulbs.

  4. Wow! All of your plants look great! Conservative to Serious Gardener might be more fitting for sure!! We have had apple trees the last three years, can't get a grip on how to take care of them. Some blooms but that's it. Maybe they are not mature enough to fruit. We thought our grapefruit would never fruit and then last year, more grapefruit than we could eat!

  5. You have apple trees? I'd like to see some pics! Do you know what kind?

  8. Glad I found your blog (via Dan's blog). That's a great looking light setup you have there!

You are located further south that I am so it looks like you get to garden pretty much year around too. That's awesome! I'm just a few miles north of Mobile. Our hottest months (July and August) are almost unbareable outside and everything burns up -- even tomatoes! About the only thing we can grow during those months are okra and maybe some shelling beans. How about you?

  9. April- Good to here from you. Hey are you gonna post those pics of your tomato supports? I'm still considering different options for my tomatoes this year and thought I might steal an idea or two from yours. Or I might just stake them. IDK.

Judy - What a great blog you've got! Yeah I'm a little bit to the south from you, but our weather is still pretty close. That's what great about Ocala, another 60-80 miles south (Orlando) and the weather turns considerably warmer. Ocala is usually a good 10-12 degrees colder than Orlando. It's like there's a line just south of here, and once you cross it you're in the real (warm) Florida!

  10. How on earth do you keep those plants in the freezes? Everything of mine, excluding some pansies and snapdragons, froze to the ground.

  11. WG- Well the truth is the potatoes got nipped a little.......I did cover them with blankets and even though it got down to 22 degrees I don't get a lot of frost because of my tree canopy. At least that's what I think!

  12. Tomato supports--they are outside buried in snow! LOL! We're supposed to have a bit of warmish weather (mid-30's) the next couple days, so maybe I can get through the drifts to take a couple pictures. I'll work on that!

Otherwise if you go to http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/tomato/msg051703171887.html?33 you will see tomato cages similar to mine. Go down to the 41st post--those look like mine. But check out the amazing spread in post 17! I didn't know there was such a thing as galvanized CRW. Now I have tomato cage envy!
