Is the Tomato your Uncle? Re-post.

As a Gardener I can't get my head around how awesome the seed is. Is there anybody out there who can make a seed from scratch? I mean it's just a piece of wood. Anybody? I didn't think so. Do you ever wonder where the seed came from? I have, and I've checked around to get different opinions and I discovered something.....um, well.....weird I guess. I discovered the Theory of Evolution teaches that not only do all animals & humans share one ancestor, but all plants as well! I know that if you ask people what evolution means you'd get a wide variety of answers. Some people think that if a bird starts growing a longer beak to snatch worms from deep holes that that is Evolution. Actually that's not Evolution, that's natural selection. The bottom line on the Theory of Evolution is that you and me share one ancestor with every living thing on earth. Including plants. To me......that's crazy ridiculous. Dumb even. I wonder how many people know that the real definition of evolution means that YOU evolved from the same ancestor as the tomato? That means you're related to that Black Krim you love so much! lolol! Cannibal!

Check it out:. "All plants and animals share common ancestors with other plants and animals." - Richard Dawkins website. Or: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_plant_evolution

What do you think?

  1. Oh - Mixing gardening, politics and religion??? You are a brave man. Not only are you a neighbor now, but I was born and raised in New England, so we were probably neighbors then too. However, I think we differ on our world view. Don't you think that having a common ancestor with all living things is beatiful? To think something a amazing as a seed was created by a little man up in the sky seems ridiculous to me. Evolution is a simple, elegant, observable process that uses natural selection to occur. If you were god, and had to explain something like this to the more simple minded people of 2000 years ago, wouldn't you come up with something like the Adam and Eve story? Fortunately, god gave us Richard Dawkins. :D

Anyway, I love a good debate, (hell, I live in Ocala, I should) so I linked you. Stop by again!

  2. Hey WG nice to here from you! I'm originally from Western Mass. by the Vermont boarder, and I love going back.

You're right, it's a little unusual to mix the three topics together, especially in a garden blog where people tend to be liberal, but it's who I am. I find beauty in a Creator that made life like a painter making a painting. I really appreciate your tone in disagreeing with me and you'll find my tone is the same. (although I'm a little sharper when I comment on Neurotic Iraqi Wife's blog, which I have a link to on my page, but that blogs tone is different).

And of course I love a good debate as well (hell I'm from New England!)

As far as Richard Dawkins? That guy! That's who I thought you were describing when you were talking about the little old man! lol! But check this out: The question was "when did life begin" - "It could come about in the following way. It could be that at some earlier time somewhere in the universe a civilization evolved by probably some kind of Darwinian means to a very very high level of technology and designed a form of life that they seeded onto perhaps this planet. Now, that is a possibility, an intriguing possibility. And I suppose it's possible that you might find evidence of that if you look at the details of biochemistry/molecular biology you might find a signature of some sort of designer. And that designer could well be a higher intelligence from elsewhere in the universe. But that higher intelligence would itself have had to have come about by some explicable or ultimately explicable process. It couldn't have just jumped into existence spontaneously. That's the point.--Richard Dawkins ”

    Wow. ok. lol!

  3. Now I know why I feel such affinity with tomatoes!

I think that judging the Theory of Evolution only by the writings of one of its proponents is a little silly. It would be like me judging Conservatives solely on the rants of Rush Limbaugh. If I was going to relate the tomato to me, I would go back all the way to the very beginning, to the time when the first unicellular organisms swam in the primordial soup. Heck, even some time after that, to the time before those organisms began differentiating into the different life forms they eventually became.
The Theory of Evolution is the result of the application of reason in the pursuit of understanding our origins. If we are honest in our pursuit, then will we follow the results of our inquiry wherever it leads us, even if we discover that we are related to tomatoes.
As for me, I am just a science fan. I have enough trouble figuring out how to grow vegetables, let alone figuring out how they came to be.
    Happy Gardening!
